Château
Belair
Chateau Bel-Air is the immediate neighbor of Chateau Ausone. It is located on the southernmost slope of Saint-Emilion know as the "Côte", with a magnificent view over the valley of the Dordogne. The domaine has been the property of the Dubois-Challon family since 1916. Madame Jean Dubois-Challon today represents the family's interests. The property is 13 hectares (32.5 acres) large, with a great diversity of soils, predominantly limestone. The limestone cap-rock is responsible for the excellent drainage. The vineyard has a south and east exposure. It is diveded into twelve sub-plots, each with its own terroir characteristics. He is utterly devoted to quality. Sitting in his small office, overlooking the vine-covered slopes, Pascal Delbeck good-naturedly describes the philosophy that has guided him at Belair from the very beginning. "We have always respected tradition. When I say "tradition", I'm not simply referring to the past, but rather a method of progressing by degrees, taking care not to regress. This is as opposed to "modernity", which consists of going forward by great strides, even if this entails going back and redoing what has already been done... The life span of a vineyard plot is calculated in terms of decades, and mistakes can be irreversible. Viticulture calls for perfect mastery of what one is doing. All vineyard operations, even removing a few leaves, have an effect. Furthermore, this effect can sometimes only show up in the long run, and not necessarily have a positive influence... Nature has its own balance. Going against this is tantamount to showing disrespect for the terroir, which is a after all a fragile microcosm. Altering the soil structure, for instance, would necessarily change the vineyard. It would no longer be the same terroir..
